During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold commencement to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Figure

The young figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
