"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just one problem: The sender also desires to be Haim's fourth member. What's more, we are not alone. Multiple high-profile supporters have openly begged for the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a close unit. Their visuals frequently depict them striding in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the greatest honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to make music."

"And thus all is invited to be the next member of Haim."

Grammy Milestone

The trio are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in contention for the prize.

"I watch the lists every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the female artists that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The record was born from a phase of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The words detail breakups and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them determining in the moment who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Sound

That recent resilience required a new sound – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The trio's honesty shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

One man ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international audience.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their number one priority.

"We have been performing since I was four," says Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
